Grandmother’s Poem

The nameless dances in the clouds,

the wind bends and the day is crowned.

Eagles soar,

free of all ground

when Asheitu laughs.

Waters roar

splash!

Rocks are contoured.

The people morph

into folklore

when Asheitu laughs.

An enchanting call,

her presence is monumental,

a thirst-quenching rainfall.

She's God’s applause,

moonlight’s reward

an island or

a seed transformed

*Nintanga* in this life

Tis’ my delight to share her light

with y’all

when Asheitu laughs.

She’s hued in joy,

aloof to decoys

in courage she is deployed,

all doubts are destroyed,

when Asheitu laughs.

The moringa tree surrenders its medicines,

a love which only heaven sends.

Coconut fruit so sweet and replenishing,

the infant,

the spirit,

and the ancient

in me agree

when Asheitu laughs.

The northern star liberates,

djembe drums through Zion’s gates.

Mountains hum and valleys celebrate!

A still Lake Michigan glistening

God listens in

when Asheitu laughs.
